Does your dog or someone you know have a dog with an annoying digging problem?
Some common questions are why do dogs dig?
Do all breeds of dog dig and can it be prevented?
Can you teach your dog not to dig if they have developed this behavior?
Intelligent dog breeds, dogs bred for hunting and some gun dogs (retrievers) tend to dig more than other dogs, although all dogs will dig if they're bored enough.
If you have one of these breeds, there are some strategies you can use to help prevent or eliminate the problem.

One solution to stop a dog from digging is to ensure you look at the breed of dog before considering bringing it into your home.
Will your dog be left alone for long periods of time (time enough for your dog to potentially dig up your whole back yard?), will your dog become bored easily and will most likely want to dig?
You could invest in a large sized sandbox and fill it with sand or dirt, or plant grass for your dog to dig.
You’ll have to ensure the sandbox is deep enough to keep your dog amused otherwise he may dig out all of the sand only to move onto more natural areas e.g. your back yard!
Initially you’ll have to watch your dog as he may be tempted to dig in areas he’s not allowed to,
if he’s digging in the wrong spot then direct him to the right area and praise him when he does dig in the right designated area.
Always tell your dog off whilst he’s in the middle of digging.
Never, tell him off after the act.
This will only confuse your dog and he will not understand what he has done wrong.
Reprimanding him each time he is caught digging will reinforce that he should not be doing it and he will begin to stop digging every time you say NO.
Make sure you also reward your dog when he stops digging with a treat or lots of attention.
especially in the warmer months. Dogs know that digging brings up moist, cool dirt which will keep them at a cooler temperature.
If they have cool shade readily available such as a tree, shallow pool (ideal for water dogs – retrievers, poodles and spaniels) or awning your dog will be less inclined to want to dig.
Nowadays, it is not necessary for dogs to hunt for their food but their natural instinct to bury food remains strong.
Because it is a natural behavior in most dogs to want to bury things create an area in your backyard especially where your dog can dig and bury things.
Ensure that if your dog digs in a non-digging area correct him straight away and take him back to where he should be digging.
Praise him as soon as he starts digging in his own designated area.
