How to Stop a Dog from JumpingDogs will usually jump on you, family, friends or your guests because they are happy and excited to see you. Their first reaction is to share all of that excitement with you by jumping up and down on you repeatedly.

If this occurs all the time it’s not a good way to greet and can cause injury to you or your guests especially if you own a medium or large dog or small children or elderly people are being greeted by the dog.

So, the important question is “how do you stop a dog from jumping?”

Stop a dog from jumping Tip # 1

Dogs usually respond positively with rewards and attention for good behavior.  As soon as your dog attempts to jump on you, say “No” in a firm voice.

At the same time, gently get a hold of your dog’s collar under his chin and pull it downwards.

Doing so forces your dog down on all fours.  Once your dog is down on his four paws, come down to his level by kneeling or sitting on the floor.  Greet your dog with lots of attention and reward him with a treat.

Ensure every time your dog attempts to jump on you, you repeat the method to create a habit.  After a few days, your dog will automatically stay on all fours as he will be expecting attention and a treat.  The same method should also be used by any person who your dog jumps on to reinforce positive behavior.

Stop a dog from jumping Tip #2

Another option to stop a dog from jumping is to not give the dog any attention when they jump.  If you completely ignore the jumping, you're not giving your dog attention; eventually the dog will realize they will have to get your attention another (hopefully more positive) way.

You will need to ensure family members and guests also do not give the dog any attention when it jumps up on them.  Reward the dog with attention or a treat when he sits.

Stop a dog from jumping Tip #3

You need to teach your dog to obey the “sit and stay” command.  This can be done by taking your dog to one of the many obedience classes available or by using an online course such as “Secrets To Dog Training”.  When your dog is trained to sit and stay it will respond to this command when you use it and you can reward your dog with attention or a treat each time it responds to this command.

Stop a dog from jumping Tip #4

Keep your dog on a leash while training and practicing the correct way to greet visitors at the door. Most dogs that have a tendency to jump on people will need to practice their new greeting many times before taking the leash off during training.

Stop a dog from jumping Tip #5

Never, under any circumstances knee, push or hurt a dog in any way to try to stop a dog from jumping as this could potentially cause harm to or aggressive behavior in the dog.  All actions should be done in a calm, positive, rewarding manner.

Stop a dog from jumping Tip #6

Ensure the dog is on a leash and encourage it to jump up on you.  When the dog attempts to jump up on you pull back gently on the leash so that you are pulling the dog away from you.  Continue with this motion (repetition is the key) until the dog is discouraged from jumping as it knows it will be pulled away from you.

Eventually the dog will not want to jump up even when encouraged. Ensure that you reward the dog with a treat each time it doesn’t attempt to jump up on you.  You will need to ensure that regular visitors to your home will also need to demonstrate this technique.

Conclusion:

Stop a dog from jumping by using one or all of the tips above and you'll get better, faster, results while keeping a positive, healthy relationship with the dog. For more ways to stop your dog's problems check out our Dove Cresswells Dog Training Review
