Dogs, don’t like to dig where there poop lies.  Pick up a bit of your dog’s poop and place it in the holes where your dog likes to dig.  This should only be done if your dog doesn’t dig too many holes in the back yard otherwise you will have a dog poop problem not a dog digging holes problem!

If you are going to be away for a long period of time you may want to consider getting a dog sitter to look after your dog or you may want to consider taking your dog to doggie day-care, which is similar to a play-center for small children. You drop your dog off in the morning and pick him up after work;

experienced trainers at the center will supervise play with other dogs, and supply them with engaging, stimulating activities. This option is a little more expensive, but very effective and your dog will love you for it.

Ensure your dog has plenty of activities and dog treats/toys to play with to keep in occupied.  Choose a ball that's too big to fit into the dog's mouth, and that is made of hard, non-puncture plastic or rubber so that your dog can push it around and most importantly he won’t be able to swallow it.

If you really want to stop a dog from digging, you can restrict his access to the garden unless he's actively being supervised by yourself or someone you trust.  If this happens then you’ll need to ensure that if your dog isn’t getting access to your garden for exercise and fresh air he is taken for a long walk or to a beach or park to exert his energy.

Conclusion:

The most important thing to remember is the healthiness and happiness of your dog.  There are many tools available to stop a dog from digging and just like a human your dog will respond to different techniques; it may be a case of trying a number of different things until you find that one that works right for you and your dog.
