Dog Training CommandsHave you ever been to a home where the dog rules the house?  The dog may bark constantly at you, jump all over you or try to bite you letting you know he’s the boss.

In this instance you can be sure the owners of the dog will defend their precious pet and will put it down to the dog just having fun, is defending its territory, is only a puppy or is not used to strangers.

Simply put the dog’s behavior may be caused by a lack of effective dog training commands.  In this article we will cover basic dog training commands which are essential for any puppy or dog to build a solid foundation for good behavior.

Dog Training Commands

Sit

The sit command is generally the first of the training commands as it is simple and will make it much easier for your dog to learn the other training commands.

State firmly the command “Sit” and use your hand to gently guide your dog into the sitting position.  Once your dog is in the sitting position reward him with praise or an edible treat.  Each time you repeat the training command “Sit” your dog should start to respond without you having to use your hand as guidance.

Down

Once your dog has learnt to sit, the next in the dog training commands should be lie down.  This can be achieved by placing an edible dog treat in your hand and holding it on the ground while you state the command “Down” or “Lie down.”

Once your dog is in the lying position allow him to eat the treat and reward him with praise, that way if there are times when you don’t have a treat to give your dog when he does respond to the training command he knows he will be given praise and a pat.

The “Down” dog training command is extremely useful if your dog has developed the habit of jumping up on people.

Stay

“Stay” in dog training commands is particularly useful if you don’t want your dog to follow you into a room such as the kitchen or if you are leaving the house and don’t want your dog to follow.  To achieve “Stay” in the training commands get your dog to obey the “Sit” command and then hold a flat palm toward him while firmly stating the word “Stay”.

This training command will allow your dog to learn obedience under control. Always remember to reward your dog with praise, a pat or an edible treat once he has responded to your training command.

Heel

Heel is essential as part of the Dog Training Commands if you will be regularly walking your dog.  Make sure you have your dog on your left side; facing the same direction as you, place an edible dog treat in your left hand in front of your hip so your dog can see and smell it.

Make sure your dog is focused on the treat and give the command “Heel” whilst at the same time taking forward steps.  Praise your dog when he walks with you and give him the treat.

You will need to practice this training command at regular interviews with your dog and be patient as it may take a few attempts before he is responding well to this training command.

Come

The “Come” command is extremely important in the dog training commands as it is used to call your dog to you.  Begin with you both being in the same room. As with all other training commands ensure you have some edible dog treats with you.

Whilst facing your dog slowly back up a few steps and call your dog by his name followed by the simple command “Come” e.g. “Sampson, come”.  As soon as your dog comes toward you hold out your hand with the treat so that he can approach and take the treat from your hand.

Slowly increase the distance between you and your dog until you are calling him from another room and then the backyard, park etc.

Conclusion

Dog training commands learning sessions should be short and frequent; if they are too long your dog will become bored, lose interest and will not follow your commands.

Also ensure that your dog knows what is expected of him – no mixed messages! You should also remember these important dog training tools - patience, praise and edible treats!
