You will need to be patient, firm and super-vigilant.  The less your dog manages to relieve himself inside the quicker he’ll learn not to.

Crate Training:

Crate training is the most efficient and quickest methods for how to housebreak a dog. A crate can be purchased from a pet store, department store or veterinary clinic and they are usually made of plastic, wire or soft material.

Ensure that the crate is the right size for your dog; your dog must be able to turn around, stand up straight and lie down snuggly and it mustn’t be too big to give him room to soil. The more comfortable and secure your dog feels in the crate the less likely he will want to try and escape.

Rules of Crate Training:

Your dog must be in his crate WHENEVER he is not eating, drinking, being actively played with or relieving himself (you will take him outside and supervise while he is relieving himself and will reward him with positive attention or a treat when he has finished).

The idea is for your dog to be in the crate for a couple of hours at a time and he should spend most of this time sleeping.  Your dog should not be left in the crate for longer than three hours at a time or four hours if he is sleeping, after this time you must wake your dog, feed, and play with your dog and ensure your dog is taken outside to relive himself (all these tasks must be supervised)

Advantages of Crate Training:

You may be asking, what is the advantage on using a crate as a dog training tool on how to housebreak a dog?  Here’s your answer.  Dogs and puppies will not willingly soil where they sleep.

Your dog or puppy will sleep in the crate, crate training works because your dog will be under your constant supervision whenever he’s out of the crate and he won’t have the opportunity to sneak off to relive himself, and because he sleeps in the crate he won’t soil it.

There are several other dog training tools on how to housebreak a dog although these are less effective than the crate training method.

Newspaper Method:

The newspaper method is less effective than any other dog training tool on how to housebreak a dog.  It involves covering the floor in your home with newspaper and training your dog to relive himself on the newspaper.

Slowly, over time you reduce the newspaper cover until eventually there are only a few sheets of newspaper covering a corner in the room; you then start moving the newspaper outside until your dog is relieving himself outside (preferably in the garden and not on your front lawn!).  Once your dog has got used to relieving himself outside you then remove the newspapers altogether.

Because this method on how to housebreak a dog means training your dog to go inside before he’s trained to go outside adds a lot of time to this method of dog training so you will have to be extremely patient with your dog.  Your dog may also not forget this method of training once he’s been trained to go outside so occasionally may relieve himself inside.

This method of how to housebreak a dog is only ideal for small indoor dogs, it’s not recommended for breeds of dogs that are difficult to housetrain.

Direct Method:

The direct method on how to housebreak a dog involves crate training your dog without the crate.  This means constantly supervising your dog to ensure he doesn’t relieve himself inside without you knowing, regularly taking your dog outside to relive himself and watching for signals such as circling and sniffing the ground to indicate that your dog needs to go outside to the toilet.

As an indication puppies need to be taken outside every hour or two and adult dogs every four to five hours.  This method of training on how to housebreak a dog requires a great deal of supervision and patience on your part.

Conclusion:

As with all dog training methods you must praise your dog when he relieves himself outside.  Only tell your dog off if you catch him in the middle of soiling on your floor; never reprimand your dog after the act as he will not understand what he has done wrong and this will not only upset him but may undo all of the good housebreaking training you have done.
