This article will focus on Dog Aggression and will cover vital information that all dog owners need to be aware of.

It’s widely known that some dog breeds and dog temperaments receive constant negative publicity for being extremely aggressive, anti-social or dangerous.

This may be slightly true in extremely isolated cases but generally this should not be an indication that your particular breed of dog has the potential to develop excessive aggressive or anti-social behavior.

The truth is any dog regardless of breed can act in an aggressive manner.

Excessive dog aggression is usually caused by poor dog ownership and behavior development not by the breed of dog.

Dog aggression only becomes a problem when it is excessive, dangerous or uncontrolled.

There will be some circumstances when dog aggression will be necessary for example if there is a physical threat to your dog, yourself or your home.

Dog aggression can be caused by a number of factors such as miss-treatment, neglect lack of training and positive discipline.  Here are some basic tips to help avoid excessive dog aggression.

It’s important to note that your dog's aggressive behavior can be used to tell you that there may be an underlying medical, physical or general health issue with your dog. If you feel there is a more serious underlying problem causing your dog’s aggressive behavior then you should consult with a vet.

Avoid Dog Aggression Tip # 1

If you have children it is important that you communicate to them guidelines in regards to your dog’s behavior.  If your dog is very playful don’t allow your children to push shove, or play tug of war with your dog even if it is done in a playful manner.

Dogs have a natural instinct to fight for dominance and will most likely push or pull back with equal or greater force.  They may see this playful game as a challenge and may become instinctively aggressive.

Avoid Dog Aggression Tip # 2

Avoid direct eye contact with your dog as he may see this as a challenge for dominance and may become aggressive.

Avoid Dog Aggression Tip # 3

Don’t sneak up on your dog or grab its paws or tail.  Your dog may act aggressively in self defense if it is startled or feels threatened in any way.  Let your dog know you are close by calling his name or approaching him from the front so he can see you.

Avoid Dog Aggression Tip # 4

Ensure your dog has developed strong socialization skills around other dogs.  Dogs will naturally become aggressive if they feel they, you or their surroundings are being threatened by another dog or person.

Training your dog to respond positively to commands is also a good way to ensure your dog does not become excessively aggressive around other people or dogs.

Avoid Dog Aggression Tip # 5

Never mistreat or neglect your dog as this may cause it to become aggressive.  Always use positive reinforcement and rewards when your dog demonstrates good behavior.

Avoid Dog Aggression Tip # 6

As a dog age’s health issues may cause him to become aggressive.  It is important to be patient and understanding with your older dog.  If you have bought a puppy into your home your dog may become aggressive as he may see the new dog as a threat to his place in the home.

He may not have the patience to deal with an overexcited, playful puppy for very long.  If your older dog starts to be become aggressive toward the puppy then take your puppy away to give your older dog some space and quiet time.

Conclusion

Dog aggression issues can occur even with the well-trained dogs and more excessive aggression issues will usually arise as a result of abuse, neglect, extremely poor training or serious underlying health issues.  Remember, your dog is a part of your family and will look to you for support, care and guidance.
