Dog Training ToolsIf you have never owned a dog before (especially a puppy) it is vitally important that you do some research first on dog training tools that will help with the task of training your new dog.

Read on for more information on basic dog training tools that will help with the success of training your new pet.

Toys and Treats

One of the essential basic dog training tools is dog treats.  Dogs respond very well to training if they are given a treat every time they follow your dog training commands.

This will build the trust between you and your dog and if your dog knows he will receive a treat every time he does what you command he is likely to want to please you very quickly.

It is very important that you give your dog treats that are made especially for dogs (no chocolate!) these dog training tools include dog chews, beef jerky, yoghurt bones, biscuits and there are carob based products made especially for dogs available on the market if your dog does like sweet treats!

Dog treats are available at your local supermarket, pet store, veterinary clinic and at one of the many pet supply stores online.

Play time should be seen as an opportunity for “training time”.  Find toys that motivate your dog to learn new tricks and skills such as fetching and returning a ball to you.

Dog Collar and Lead

Two important dog training tools are the dog collar and lead.  Ensure when you purchase a dog collar that it fits properly around your dog’s neck. There should be enough room to comfortably slide two fingers between your dog’s neck and the collar.

If it is any tighter it may rub against your dog’s neck causing great discomfort and if it is any looser your dog’s head may slip out of the collar.

If you have a puppy that is not used to wearing a collar it will take time for him to feel comfortable wearing it for long periods of time so, start gradually and slowly increase the length of time your puppy wears the collar.

Give your puppy treats (dog training tools) each time he wears the collar so that he will develop a good association with wearing it.  It is advisable not to leave collars on young puppies if they are unsupervised.

Nylon or retractable leads are popular dog training tools for dogs.  Retractable leads will allow your dog more freedom to move especially if it is not used to wearing a lead and collar but you will need to watch your dog and control the length of the lead.

If you ever take the dog off the lead when they are at a park or beach, then having a clicker can be very useful too. You will have to make sure you do appropriate dog clicker training first.

Dog grooming supplies

An important part of your dog training regime is teaching your dog to be groomed.  You should at least have two dog training tools; a metal comb and soft dog brush for easy grooming especially if you have a long haired dog.

Your dog’s nails should be regularly clipped and you will find instructions on how to do this at pet stores, veterinary clinics or by one of the many dog grooming courses available in your local area or on online.

Ensure when grooming for dogs and are using clippers; never use human clippers.  If you don’t feel confident clipping your dog’s nails or trimming your dog’s hair then there are many professional dog grooming businesses that will be able to do this for you.

These can be found in the Yellow Pages, online or speak to your vet, local pet store, friends and family for recommendations.

Crate training

Another dog training tool recommended by most breeders and trainers is crate training for dogs that are to be kept indoors.  The crate should be large enough for your puppy or dog to move around and lie in and it should never be used as a place for punishment.

Your dog will associate the crate as a place of safety and comfort and will enjoy its own quiet space.

There are many dog training tools available to ensure the safe, healthy training of your puppy or dog.   If you’re having major difficultly in training your dog; be sure to consult your local pet store, veterinary clinic or local dog training school who will recommend further dog training tools to use.
