Puppy Potty Training TechniquesPuppy potty training needs to start when your puppy is a couple of weeks old.

You might want to start puppy potty training when he’s 2 weeks old and has opened his eyes.

Consider your puppy to be on par with a human baby who is a couple of weeks old.

He will definitely not have any control over his bladder. Therefore, he needs to be taken to potty, about 30 to 40 minutes after he has eaten.

Establish a Routine:

You need to exercise extreme patience during puppy potty training.

Do not lose your patience with your dependent little pup, if he makes a mess on the floor, he is too small to know any better, and punishing him is only going to make your pup feel more helpless.

This is why you need to show him a place where he needs to go potty, which can be either an outbox with some earth in it or pick him up gently and take him outside, about 30 to 40 minutes after he has been fed.

You might want to take him to a designated place, every day at the same time, so that your pup understands that this is the place where he has to go potty.

Puppy potty training needs a lot of patience, and perseverance on your part. With this your pup will slowly and steadily understand that going potty in the house is unacceptable behavior.

You need to praise your puppy for going outside on his own accord when he needs to relieve itself.

The praise and appreciation is going to show him that he has done something really good and he will follow this same procedure for the rest of his life.

Scolding or hurting your pup if he has gone inside is not acceptable; it just means you need to be more consistent with his puppy potty training.

All puppy dog training needs to be done calmly, patiently and assertively with lots of reward when your pup does the right thing.

If your pup does relieve himself inside ignore him, clean up the mess and then take him outside to show him exactly where he does need to go.

Always supervise your pup whilst he is inside and if you see him walking around looking for a place to relieve himself gently pick him up and take him outside.

Verbal Commands:

Verbal commands are very useful when puppy potty training.

You can use a word such as “outside” which is a verbal cue to your pup that it’s time to go outside to relieve himself.

Ensure that everyone in the household uses the same word and only use the command for a specific purpose e.g. don’t use the word “outside” when you are taking your pup for a walk or out to play as this will confuse him.

Conclusion:

Puppy potty training should be done in a calm, positive manner.

Be patient when potty training your pup as he will not get it the first time.

As soon as he has been potty trained you can move onto other dog training commands. If you have a problem with dog eating poop then read our article for solutions.
