Dog Licking Can Be AnnoyingIt’s normal for dogs to use dog licking as a way to greet a human.

While people don’t lick each other to greet, they do use their tongues for other things such as eating ice cream or licking the spoon from the cookie dough bowl.

Most societies don’t consider dog licking as a form of greeting.

Dogs make use of their tongues to investigate the world around them.

The human hands and eyes are important to explore what is around them but for a dog, the tongue is vitally important.

After all, they use it to taste things, learn about the new people and animals around them, express being submissiveness and make their masters aware how much they appreciate and love them.

A dog that constantly uses dog licking on you no matter where you are in your home, can be quite annoying.

If you’re trying to get work done, it’s not uncommon to feel bombarded by your dog and his constant dog licking, on any skin that is exposed to their tongue. Sometimes the shock of their tongue on you can cause you to become startled.

Understanding Dog Licking:

It’s important to understand the meaning behind dog licking. After all, it doesn’t just mean that he is being affectionate with you.

It can be a variety of behaviors based on the state of mind your dog is in. It’s up you to verify your dog’s actions. After all, no one else can figure it out for you.

Reasons for Dog Licking:

Affection - Most times dogs will lick because they feel affectionate; owners can easily figure out that this is the reason for their pet's constant dog licking problem.

After all, their dog’s body is relaxed and their mood is carefree and happy. However, some owners may have a problem with this and will need to learn ways to teach their dog not to lick.

Anxious – Another reason dogs will lick their masters is from the feeling of being stressed out or anxious.

When the dog is unhappy because of things happening in his life, it’s not uncommon for them to be obsessive-compulsive when it comes to certain behaviors such as dog licking.

Owners can determine pretty easily if their dog is stressed out and figure out why the pup is feeling less than happy.

Once this determination has been made, the owner will need to find ways to make their dog happy again. Perhaps you need to pay attention to him or he needs more exercise.

Food/Water – He may not be getting enough water or nutrients from his food.  Ensure he always has enough fresh water and his food is full of good nutrients for his health.

Worms/Ticks – He may have worms or ticks which are causing skin irritation so he is licking to relive the itching.  Ensure that he has regular worming/tick treatments.

How To Change Your Dog’s Habit:

Once you’ve worked out why your pooch has a dog licking habit, it’s up to you to make some adjustments if you want the licking to stop.

Remember though you want to treat the cause for the dog licking, not just the symptoms. However, you need to remember that licking is the way your “best friend” is expressing their bad feelings, which isn’t fair for either one of you if you take it away.

Some adjustments you can make is coming home a little earlier than you usually do, giving him more exercise, grooming, more play time.

Remember that your dog may be just licking because he is happy but watch your pup’s demeanor. If your pup is licking you and seems happy, he is showing you how much he loves you.

If you don’t like it, simply alter your body language since dogs will pick up on it immediately.

This means you’ll need to withdraw your open display of affection for your dog. You’ll need to get up and walk away as soon as he begins to lick you.

Give your dog a strong “no”; a command that’s short, sweet and to the point.  Be calm, assertive and patient as it may take a few times before your dog understands that you want him to stop licking you.

Conclusion:

It’s natural for dog’s to want to lick their owners.

If your dog does start licking you more than usual then work out if something has changed in his routine or habits and ensure you work with your pet to rectify this.
