If he is untrained as a puppy, he is going to be almost uncontrollable as an adult because Labradors are extremely active and can become easily over excited if not trained properly or exercised regularly.

This is why your pet needs to know the difference between acceptable Labrador Retriever behavior and unacceptable behavior from a very young age.

You need to have realistic expectations when Labrador training your pup.

He will be easily excited, will want to play and will not have a large attention span to learn commands straight away so repetition and patience is very important.

You need to be calm assertive when Labrador training, becoming frustrated with him will not achieve the results you desire.

Positive reinforcement works well with Labradors because of their instinctive nature to want to please their owners.

Everyone in the family should be consistent with Labrador training and teaching your pup from a young age what behaviors are expected of him.

There is no point punishing him for climbing up on the furniture or on the bed when there is another member of the family who allows him to do this when you are not around.

Repeat just one command for just one particular action! Repeat the name of your dog, so that he understands that his name is Oscar, along with the command.

For example “Oscar, sit!" Reward him with lots of praise, and appreciation, when he follows your command, if this is done repetitively it will soon become instinctive for him to understand and obey the command.

Only teach your Labrador one command or behavior at a time, make sure he masters the command or behavior before you move onto the next one,

trying to teach your Lab too many things at once will only confuse him and may undo all of the good work you have done.

Set up a good routine with your Lab.  When he knows that he is going to get his food, go out for a walk, be trained and be put to bed at given times every day,

he is going to understand that he needs to keep to a routine. Labrador training is extremely easy, if you stick to one particular routine consistently.

Owning a Labrador is a rewarding experience because they make excellent family pets.

Owning a well trained, well behaved Labrador is the result of plenty of perseverance, patience and slow training done consistently.
