In this second article, characteristics of dogs, you will learn more about the characteristics of small dogs the Pug, Maltese, Poodle, Yorkshire terrier, Pomeranian and Chihuahua.

 

Characteristics of Dogs – Pug

 

The characteristics of dogs such as the Pug are that they are a small breed of dog with a wrinkly, short muzzled face. 

 

The Pug has a fine coat which comes in black, fawn, apricot or silver. 

 

The Pugs coat sheds a lot so regular coat grooming is required.

 

Other characteristics of the Pug include being sociable, clever and attentive. 

 

They require a lot of human attention and will become agitated or anxious if they feel they’re being ignored. 

 

Pugs do not cope well in extreme temperatures so there should always be access to water or shade in the heat and warmth in cooler temperatures.

Characteristics of Dogs – Maltese

 

The Maltese is a small dog known for its silky white coat. 

 

Regular grooming for dogs and shampooing is required to prevent matting and staining of the coat. 

 

Other characteristics of dogs such as the Maltese include being lively, playful and loveable.  They learn new tricks easily

 

Maltese are well suited to apartment living because of their small size and their preference for enclosed spaces.

 

They are intelligent dogs, are easy to train and they also get on well with other animals.

Characteristics of Dogs – Poodle

 

Poodles come in a variety of sizes and colors. 

 

Their hypoallergenic coats may reduce allergic reactions but require regular grooming. 

 

Poodles are people-orientated dogs and are eager to please their owners. 

 

They are highly energetic and if bored can become destructive.  They are adaptable, easy to train and are known as one of the most intelligent breeds of dog. 

 

 

Common characteristics of the Poodle include being skillful in many different dog sports including agility,

 

tracking and obedience and they have a great reputation at excelling at Dog Shows.

 

Poodles are suited for most sized living areas due to their adaptability.

 

Characteristics of Dogs – Yorkshire Terrier

 

The Yorkshire Terrier or “Yorkie” as they are fondly known is a small dog breed with a long silky coat. 

 

Their coat requires regular brushing to prevent matting. 

 

They are terriers by nature and are energetic, brave and determined dogs. 

 

Yorkies have strong personalities so if they are not trained properly and given gentle leadership can develop demanding,

 

overprotective and dependent behaviors. 


Yorkies are easily adaptable to all surroundings, travel well and make suitable pets for many homes. Due to their small size, they require limited exercise, but need daily interaction with their owner.  


They are very affectionate to their owner but may need socialization with other animals and people as they have a tendency to be suspicious and overprotective.


Yorkies make great watchdogs as they will bark at any strange activity. 

 

Characteristics of Dogs – Pomeranian


Pomeranians are short and small dogs with a thick double coat.

 

Their coat requires regular grooming and trimming to keep it in tidy condition.

 


They are extremely intelligent and extroverted which makes them a very popular show dog. 

 

They like a lot of interaction with their owners which make them ideal companion dogs. 


Because of their small size Pomeranians are not ideally suited for small children. 


Pomeranians need to be trained from an early age to only bark in certain situations as they have a high pitched bark and have a tendency to bark more than they need to. 


This breed of dog tends be dominant and they have no hesitation in confronting dogs 3-4 times their size. 

 

You should learn how to socialize your dog from an early age and teach your dog who is the Alpha dog in the household.


Pomeranians are active and require moderate exercise. They are intelligent and with proper training and learn tricks.


Characteristics of Dogs - Chihuahua


The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world; however don’t be fooled by their small size.  Chihuahuas are naturally protective and territorial. 

 

They are extremely devoted to their owner/s and crave a lot of attention so they are not the ideal dog if you are not able to devote much time to them. 

 

They prefer to be with other Chihuahuas over other dogs and animals because of their territorial and protective nature so it’s best to socialize them from a young age. 

 

Chihuahuas are known to bark excessively when left alone for too long and can develop separation anxiety if they feel they are not getting enough attention from their owner.

 

Chihuahuas are alert, observant and make excellent watchdogs. 

 

They are suited only for indoors and can live very comfortably in an apartment. 

 

Chihuahuas should never be left alone outdoors because of their small size.

 

These dogs make excellent pets for first time dog owners.

Pugs are like humans. More than any other dog I have ever adopted. They are very smart, love to be your baby and become very attached to their owners. They are truly a very special breed.
