If you are looking at owning a dog then it’s crucial that you do your research first on different dog temperaments (personalities),
characteristics and breeds to ensure the dog you ultimately choose is the ideal match for you and your lifestyle.
Owning a dog is a huge responsibility and long-term commitment so it should not be taken lightly.
There are many different dog temperaments including active, loyal, protective, gentle, intelligent, independent and loving.
In this two part article we will be describing different dog temperaments and breeds. Do remember that dogs just like humans will have their own unique personality.
Active Dog Temperaments
These dogs require a lot of regular exercise.
Akita
The Akita is a breed of large dog originating from Japan. Dog temperaments of the Akita include being intelligent, loyal and can be trained easily. They can be dominant and aggressive towards other dogs or animals because of their hunting abilities but are gentle with young children and babies.
American Foxhound
Dog temperaments of the American Foxhound include being loyal, kind and very loving. Foxhounds can become bored easily and can be very destructive so it is very important that they receive plenty of regular exercise.
Border Collie
The Border Collie is an intelligent breed with an instinctive desire to work closely with humans. Their primary is that of the working stock dog but they are becoming increasingly popular as pets. Border Collies require a lot of exercise and activities.
English Foxhound
Dog temperaments of The English Foxhound include being gentle, social and tolerant and gets on well with other dogs and people. Just like the American Foxhound however it is very active and requires plenty of regular exercise.
German Shepherd
German Shepherds are highly active dogs; they have a loyal nature and bond well with people they know. They can become overprotective of their family especially if they have not been introduced to other dogs correctly.
Greyhound
Greyhounds are pack-orientated dogs which means they get on well with other dogs, family pets and children.
Shetland Sheepdog
Dog temperaments of the Shetland Sheepdog include being an outstanding companion dog. They are intelligent, loving, affectionate and loyal. Shetland Sheepdogs like to be kept busy and active.
Siberian Husky
Siberian Huskies are and extremely intelligent dog and require consistent training. They tend to be very active as they were first bred to be a sled dog so require regular exercise.
Whippet
Whippets are generally quiet and gentle dogs. They are friendly with people and children. They are not suited to live outdoors as their coats do not provide insulation for long periods in cold temperatures.
Friendly Dog Temperaments
These dogs are friendly with other people and animals.
American Cocker Spaniel
Dog temperaments of the American Cocker Spaniel include being extremely happy, trusting and intelligent. They are good with people including children and other pets. They have a great love of toys.
Bichon Frise
The Bichon Frise is happy, playful and affectionate. They love being around people and get excited when they have company. Bichon Frise dogs require lots of patience when being housetrained.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Dog temperaments of The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel include being highly affectionate, friendly dogs that are eager to please. They have the ability to bond with small and larger dogs which makes them the ideal pet if there is already another breed of dog in the house.
English Cocker Spaniel
English Cocker Spaniel’s don’t like to be left alone. They are an extremely affectionate and loyal breed and will bond with new family members easily.
Golden Labrador Retriever
Gold Labradors are a friendly, well-balanced, intelligent breed. Golden Labrador’s are great with other animals and people including children which make them an ideal family pet.
Old English Sheepdog
This breed’s temperament can be described as social, adaptable and intelligent. They generally get on well with other dogs and pets and older children. They do have a tendency to “clown” around and may knock over objects because of their large size.
Independent Dog Temperaments
These dogs can keep themselves happily occupied if left by themselves for short periods of time. Do remember that no dog should be left alone for an extended period of time.
Afghan Hound
Dog temperaments of the Afghan Hound include having a slow “obedience intelligence”, they are highly independent dogs and have a tendency to ignore commands preferring to do their own thing.
Airedale Terrier
The Airedale Terrier like most terriers has been bred to hunt independently. Common dog temperaments in this breed include being very strong-willed, intelligent, independent and at times stubborn.
Chinese Shar-pei
The Shar-pei is extremely loyal, devoted and affectionate to its family. They make good guard dogs because of their protective nature (very suspicious of strangers) and they are also very independent.
