Dog TemperamentsAs in Part 1 of this article you will learn more about different dog temperaments, and breeds in this second installment. 


Intelligent Dog Temperaments


These dogs can be easily trained and learn new tricks quickly.


Australian Cattle Dog


Dog temperaments of the Australian Cattle dog include being extremely active and intelligent.  

 

They require plenty of exercise and a variety of activities as they have been bred as working dogs.  These dogs are also wary of strangers so also make good guard dogs when properly trained.


Doberman Pinscher


There is a misconception that these dogs are only aggressive and ferocious but this is only when they been bred and trained in this manner.  The Doberman Pinscher is actually a loving, loyal gentle dog and is ranked amongst the most intelligent of dog breeds.

Golden Retriever


The Golden Retriever’s temperament is friendly, confident, intelligent, trusting and loyal.  It ranks very highly in obeying obedience commands and if you own a Golden Retriever you can teach your dog words (the Golden Retriever can learn many words, commands and phrases).  Golden Retrievers are also very patient especially with children.


Papillon


Papillons are known for their large butterfly-like ears. They are a small toy breed but have a surprising athletic ability (it is not uncommon for them to walk for miles).  Papillons have been rated eighth in all breeds for intelligence. 


Poodle


Dog temperaments of the Poodle include being eager to please its owner, easy to train and being highly energetic.  Poodles are very intelligent and learn new skills quicker than most other dog breeds.

These dogs are particularly loyal to their owners and will do anything to please their owner.


Bullmastiff


The Bullmastiff is calm, loving and extremely loyal to its family.  It is very protective of its family and territory so will also make a great guard dog. 


Collie


Dog temperaments of the Collie include being bred as a working or herding dog and also as a pet.  The type of Collie bred as pets are known to be highly trainable, intelligent, gentle and loyal. 


Labrador


The Labrador is the most popular breed of dog (registered ownership) in the world.  Dog temperaments of the Labrador include being friendly, confident and loyal.  For this dog labrador training is very easy as these dogs are very sociable with people including strangers so don’t make ideal guard dogs. 


Samoyed


Samoyeds have a loyal, playful and friendly disposition and are great with people including children.  They require regular exercise to prevent boredom, depression and destructive behaviors. 


Protective Dog Temperaments


These dogs are ideal as guard dogs and are highly protective of their owners.


American Staffordshire Terrier


Dog temperaments of the American Staffordshire Terrier include its courageous, friendly and loyal nature.  They are highly intelligent dogs and learn new skills very quickly.  Because of their protective nature American Staffordshire Terriers make ideal guard dogs. 


Boxer


The Boxer is devoted to its family but distrustful of strangers hence making it ideally suited as a protective or guard dog.  Other characteristics of this breed include being playful, energetic and highly active. The Boxer requires regular exercise to prevent it from becoming bored.


Bull Terrier


Bull Terrier’s make excellent guard dogs if trained properly, however it must be noted that these dogs are highly intelligent and can be difficult to train because of their stubbornness.  They are typically affectionate dogs that company and will only be aggressive if they have been trained this way.


Chow Chow


Dog temperaments of the Chow Chow include its fierce protectiveness of its home and its mistrust of strangers.  The Chow Chow is extremely loyal to its family and generally will only show affection to those it bonds to which makes it an ideal protective breed of dog.


German Shepherd


German Shepherds are highly active dogs and are a very popular selection as a working dog.  They are highly intelligent and learn new skills very quickly.  They can become over-protective of their family and territory which makes them ideal as guard dogs but they are also very loyal and bond well with people they know.


Rhodesian Ridgeback


Dog temperaments of this dog include its intelligent, strong-willed and loyal nature.   If trained properly they can make an excellent guard dog because of their natural aloofness to strangers and protectiveness over their family.  One of the main dog temperaments of this breed is that these dogs do not respond well to harsh or rough training methods.


Rottweiler


Dog temperaments of the Rottweiler include being obedient, intelligent and loyal to its family including children.  Rottweilers are highly protective of its family and surroundings which makes it an ideal guard dog.  Obedience training and socialization are essential. 

 

It must be noted that Rottweiler’s generally only display highly aggressive behavior when they have been neglected, abused and poorly trained


Conclusion


As you can see there are many dog temperaments in different breeds of dogs so remember to do your research first before selecting a breed of dog as your pet.  It’s worth remembering that dogs can live between 10-18 years and they will become an important, rewarding member of your family.
