In this third article, characteristics of dogs, you will learn more about the characteristics of large dogs: Boxers, Bulldogs, Great Danes, Newfoundland’s, Rottweiler’s and Saint Bernard’s.

Characteristics of Dogs – Boxers

Boxers are strong, loyal and lively.  They are intelligent dogs and carry themselves with pride without the arrogance.

Other characteristics of Boxers include having a short, smooth, shiny coat which requires minimum grooming and a medium stocky build.  Boxers make excellent guard dogs and are commonly used for military, rescue and police work.

Boxers need companionship and will misbehave if left alone for too long.  They love children and get on well with other animals they have been raised with.

Characteristics of Dogs – Bulldogs

The Bulldog is built low to the ground and is heavy.  They have a short glossy and smooth coat which requires minimal brushing.

Bulldogs are kind, strong and courageous dogs.  They are extremely loyal to their family, gentle and get on well with children. Bulldogs make great guard dogs and will only bark when necessary.

They get on well with other dogs they have been brought up with but may try to bully dogs they don’t know.  Bulldogs are known to be possessive of their food and should be fed on their own.

Characteristics of Dogs – Great Danes

Great Danes are large dogs that can grow up to 32 inches in height.   They are affectionate, loyal and playful.  Because of their large size children should be supervised in the presence of Great Danes and they need to be trained and socialized properly from a young age to avoid behavioral problems and aggression towards other dogs.

Because of their size Great Danes require regular exercise and a large back yard to exercise in.

They have a short glossy coat that requires minimum maintenance.

Characteristics of Dogs – Newfoundlands

Newfoundland’s are large dogs and are known for their excellent ability to swim and they are commonly used as water rescue dogs.  Their coat is water resistant and protects them from extremely cold climates and icy water.  Their coat requires daily brushing.

Newfoundland’s are extremely friendly, lovable and affectionate dogs.  They are extremely protective of their family and are excellent with children.  Newfoundland’s become so attached to their family that they do not adjust properly if moved to a new home or family.

They have a tendency to be sensitive so training should be done gently and patiently.  Newfoundland’s need swimming, daily walks and play sessions.

Characteristics of Dogs – Rottweilers

Rottweilers have a very distinctive coat – black and bright rust coloring along their legs, muzzle and underbelly.

It is important that Rottweiler’s learn training and socialization with other dogs from an early age. They are lovable dogs but do have a serious side.  They can be extremely protective and territorial of their family and environment.

Rottweilers have a reputation as being vicious dogs but given the right training, socialization, love and affection they do really well in a family home.  Rottweilers should be supervised around children because of their powerful strength and size.

Rottweiler’s are highly intelligent and will be keen to learn new skills.

Characteristics of Dogs – Saint Bernards

Saint Bernard’s are extremely loyal and friendly.  They are highly intelligent and are commonly used as search and rescue dogs because of their strong sense of smell and direction.  They have a dense, water resistance coat which needs to be groomed daily because it sheds heavily.

Saint Bernard’s are great with children and other animals and make for an excellent family pet.  They are prone to dog separation anxiety and destructive behavior if left alone for too long because they become much attached to their family and need lots of constant love and attention.

They make excellent watch dogs because of their protective nature toward their family.

Saint Bernard’s need to be trained and socialized from an early age because they grow into very large dogs.    They have a strong desire to please their owner and will respond positively to gentle, firm and patient training.
